What is Consumer-Directed Care?

CPDTime.
8m of CPD
Consumer-directed care (or CDC) is a ‘self-directed’ healthcare model in which the client is afforded flexibility and choice in the delivery of their care. All aged care Home Care Packages (HCP) in Australia must be based on a consumer-directed care model.

What is this article about?

Under the consumer-directed care model, consumers are empowered to choose the type of supports they would like to receive, who delivers these supports, and when and where they are delivered - care decisions that would historically be made by the care team rather than the client

Person centred care is essential in aged care provision particular to dementia care in care facilities or home care, however it is often under utilised perhaps due to lack of understanding.

This reading provided me with new knowledge and reinforced existing knowledge. It was directly relevant to my scope as an enrolled nurse in the areas of consumer-directed care and aged care. I undertook this activity to fill a gap I identified in my knowledge and have a better understanding of the consumer-directed care (or ‘CDC’), which refers to a ‘self-directed’ healthcare model in which the client is afforded the right to full autonomy in all decision-making related to that care. All home care packages in Australia are currently mandated to be based on a consumer-directed care model.

Precise and very clear in the differentiation of Client Centred Care versus Consumer Directed Care. Reflecting on the applicability in the acute setting. Principals of Consumer Directed Care are obviously in line with CCC , however, the focus on consumer choice and control maybe challenged in some acute situations and with compromised patient cognitive capacity for example.
